How Many Widths Should I use for My Curtain Side Panels?
Last Updated on
Creating the right window treatment for each room of your house means considering elements of design and making your choices ahead of time, before materials are purchased and hung. For example, as part of our interior design services at Athena’s Window Fashions in Gilbert AZ, we’re often asked, “How many widths should I use for my curtain side panels?” The answer to that question requires you to consider three factors:
- How much wall space exists beyond the edge of the opening where you want the curtain to be installed?
- How much of the window are you willing to cover?
- What will the finished length of the treatment be?
Once you’ve answered these three questions, it’s easy to determine what you need. Let’s start with clarifying the third question. The taller the drapes are, the narrower they appear. If your finished length is greater than 108”, than consider doing 1 ½ widths or even 2 widths. (https://www.realsimple.com/home-organizing/decorating/curtains-window-treatments?)
The center pair of drapes are 1 ½ widths of fabric per side. The outside drapes are 1 width of fabric per side.
This treatment is 1 ½ width panels with a finished length of 108”
If you do not have much space on either side of your window and your finished length is less than 108”, then 1 width panel will be a good choice.
If you desire a luxurious look, then you may want 2 widths of fabric on each side of the treatment, such as in the picture above.
These examples should give you a head start in making sound decisions about your curtain project.Keep in mind, you have the final say. There is no right or wrong answer here.
